The 19th century German amateur astronomer, Wilhelm Tempel (1821-1889), has long been celebrated as one of the most prolific comet hunters in history. What most folk fail to appreciate is that he did the majority of his work with a fine 4-inch Steinheil achromatic refractor (where the flint element is placed ahead of the crown).
